What to Pack in a Diaper Bag: Checklist and 6 Mistakes to Avoid

A well-packed diaper bag is the difference between a relaxed outing and a race against the clock to find a clean nappy. But it's just as easy to go too far the other way and leave the house with a bag weighing 5 kilos. Here's the essential checklist, plus the most common mistakes to avoid.
The basic diaper bag checklist
For an outing of a few hours, here's what to take:
- Nappies: allow one for every 2 to 3 hours, plus a spare.
- Wipes or cotton pads, and a small bottle of water or cleansing lotion if you use one.
- A changing mat, either built into the bag or foldable.
- A complete change of clothes: bodysuit, sleepsuit or trousers, socks.
- A large muslin: burp cloth, backup blanket, makeshift sunshade.
- Bags for dirty nappies and wet clothes.
- A meal or a bottle, depending on age, plus water.
- A spare dummy if your baby uses one.
- A small, familiar toy to help pass the time.
And for you, don't forget hand sanitiser, tissues, a snack and a bottle of water.
Mistake 1: choosing a bag that's too big
A big bag tempts you to pack everything 'just in case'. The result: it's heavy, bulky and you can never find anything. A compact diaper bag with several pockets forces you to stick to the essentials, and it fits easily under the pushchair or clips onto the handle.
Mistake 2: not restocking when you get home
It's the classic one: you get home tired, drop the bag, and the next day discover there are no nappies left. Get into the habit of restocking as soon as you're back: nappies, wipes, a clean outfit. Two minutes that will save you a lot of panic.
Mistake 3: forgetting a change of clothes... for you
One spilt bottle or one leaky nappy, and your T-shirt pays the price too. Tuck a light spare top into the bottom of the bag, rolled up in a zip-lock bag. You'll thank us later.
Mistake 4: throwing everything into the main pocket
When your baby is crying, every second counts. Organise your bag into zones:
- Main compartment: nappies, wipes, change of clothes.
- Insulated pockets: bottles or fruit pouches.
- Small outer pocket: keys, phone, tissues.
- Separate pouch: bags for dirty laundry.
You'll find everything with your eyes closed, even in a badly lit park.
Mistake 5: overlooking the changing mat
Public baby-changing tables aren't always clean, or even available. A changing mat built into your bag is a must. Lay a clean muslin on top for extra comfort, and wipe the mat down after each use.
Mistake 6: letting the dummy tour the pavement
A dummy that hits the ground is a dummy that needs washing before it goes back in. A pacifier clip attached to your baby's clothes keeps it clean and within reach on your walk. Just remember to take it off when your baby is sleeping.
Adapting the contents to your baby's age
- 0 to 6 months: more nappies and spare outfits, a muslin, and bottle-feeding gear if needed.
- 6 to 12 months: add a small jar or fruit pouch, a spoon, a bib and a sensory toy.
- Over 1 year: fewer nappies, but snacks, a water bottle and something to keep your little one busy in queues.
With a well-organised bag that you restock after every outing, getting out and about with a baby becomes a pleasure again. Pack it carefully once, and from then on it will only need a few minutes of upkeep.
